It seems that Canon will be the first of the big, digital camera manufacturers to recognize that, in the long run, the threat coming from smartphone cameras needs to be acknowledged. Based on the recently filed patents,
it looks like Canon is preparing an accessory that will allow the mounting of its lenses onto a smartphone.
The sheer size of this new product, as defined in the patent files, suggests that Canon plans to offer a range of lenses to be used with it.
Lens attachments for smart phones aren’t new, but they have been shied away from.
The lens you see is big and bulky and could be an issue but could also improve the image quality.
It’s nice to see a company use accessories beyond just the traditional camera supplies.
“Also, it doesn’t seem to rely on the smartphone’s camera itself, which suggests that it might need to be powered by Canon’s own software.”
